J.K. Rowling Publishes Next Instalment Of Harry Potter
A mere seven years on from the final installment of the Harry Potter series and the question of ‘what happens next’ is still on all Potter fans minds. Well, J.K. Rowling thought as much and thus, today (8th July), she released a 1,500 word tabloid style extract on her website Pottermore. A final instalment to the Harry Potter series (hurrah).
We haven’t heard anything from the infamous trio since the 670th page of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ in 2007. But this new piece of writing, in the voice of the gossip journalist Rita Skeeta entitled “Dumbledore’s Army reunites at Quidditch World Cup Final”, is the moment that all Harry Potter fans have been waiting for.
Harry, Ron and Hermione are celebrity guests at the final match of the Quidditch World Cup (leading us to wonder if Rowling has had this written for years, but has awaited for it to parallel with our own slightly less magical World Cup).
They are also in the company of the Triwizard Cup Tournament competitor, Viktor Krum, (former boyfriend to Hermione), Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom and his wife Hannah Abbott; all of which were students at Hogwarts and members of Dumbledore’s Army.
Due to Skeeter’s sensational claims of marital trouble and ill health, it’s difficult to unearth the new developments and the truths that Rowling is trying to convey. However, it tells us that Harry Potter, now 34 years old, with “threads of silver” in his jet black hair (we’d like to picture him as a young and very magical George Clooney thank you very much) is still sporting his iconic round glasses which Skeeta claims are “better suited to a style-deficient twelve-year-old”. However, Harry has a new scar to on his cheek, to accompany the notorious one on his forehead and Skeeter speculates that a mysterious cut on his cheekbone could be the result of his wife, Ginny Weasley.
Ron Weasley’s vibrant red hair “seems to be thinning slightly” and he is still married to his child-hood sweetheart, Hermione Granger. Granger is now to Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, (where Ron and Harry are both employed at as well) while being mother to Hugo and Rose.
The three are described as “a certain gang of infamous wizards… no longer the fresh-faced teenagers they were in their heyday, but nevertheless recognisable” but it is still evident that they are loyal friends.
The extract, featuring on Pottermore says in Skeeter’s words: “One always hesitates to invade the privacy of young people, but the fact is that anyone closely connected with Harry Potter reaps the benefits and must pay the penalty of public interest.” She is bitchy throughout, questioning: “Does Hermione Granger prove that a witch really can have it all? (No – look at her hair.)” And Hermione is described as “the femme fatale of the group” and the report refers to rumours that she had an affair with “the muscular Viktor Krum” before settling for Ron.
Neville Longbottom is a popular Herbology teacher at Hogwarts, married to Hannah. Luna Lovegood is married to Newt Scamander’s grandson, Rolf, and they have twin boys.
And Bill Weasley remains happily married to Fleur Delacour despite being “grievously scarred from an encounter with a werewolf”.
As the generation of original Potter fans, we’re just happy to get our hands on any new Potter related material Rowling has to send our way. Was this 1,500 word release by J.K. Rowling, all that you had hoped for?
