Is There Life After The X Factor
The X Factor has been back on our screens for a while now but for some reason, I haven’t been as involved in it this year. I completely missed the audition stages and when I did finally tune into the live shows, what I saw wasn’t much to rave about. In light of this new batch of “talent” I wondered how much the X Factor is truly able to make real stars.
1. Misha B
After becoming a finalist on the eight season of X Factor, Misha signed to Relentless Records. Her debut single peaked at number 11 in the UK singles chart and in Autumn 2012 supported Nicki Minaj on her Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour. Although Misha has had success with mix tapes on the urban scene, she hasn’t really set the music scene alight in terms of numbers. She has the vocals to do well but just needs the right backing.
2. Alexandra Burke
Alexandra won the X Factor in 2008 and since then has had considerable success. She has been one of the most successful winners of the show despite having various record label changes. Although Alexandra can sing, the music she eventually made wasn’t really tickling anyone’s fancy and after a failed attempt at being a footballer’s wife and get on the fame train that way, she’s fallen relatively out of the spot light. Her second studio album was released in August of this year and she is set to make her US debut having performed at the Apollo Theater in June.
3. Leona Lewis
Leona was the first winner of the X Factor where we actually begun to take notice of the potential talent on the show. To say that Leona can sing is an understatement as this girl as a truly spectacular voice. It’s a shame her stylist isn’t as incredible. Why can this girl not catch a break? Even though she can sing and has had major success, selling up the place and being on epic movie soundtracks for James Cameron, she continues to fall below the radar because she’s just so BORING! Since her X Factor win in 2006 she has gone from strength to strength professionally in terms of sales and what not, but she has not personality and becomes really forgettable.
JLS were the runners up in 2008 but have had a lot more success than the winner! Initially signed to Epic Records, their first two singles went straight to number one. They then went to the US and signed a deal with Jive Records but their first single failed to chart. The lads came back home however and continued their success streak with more numbers one singles and albums. Unfortunately they decided to call it quits in April of this year.
5. James Arthur
The amazing voice that is James Arthur won the competition in 2012. A lot of people were worried that James would succumb to the X Factor winner curse and not actually get anywhere once they won. His first official single (as opposed to the one they automatically release at the end of the show) “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You” is a far cry from what we thought he would have released but there is no doubt that James Arthur is an incredible artist and we can only expect greater things from him.
6. Olly Murs
What can we say about the singer turned presenter turned singer again. There are a few Olly Murs tunes that pop off in a cheese club and then you really are loving him but I think I preferred him on the Xtra Factor with that Harry stealing old lady Caroline Flack! He finished as the runner up to Joe McElderry in 2009 but has of course has more success than him! Olly has had considerable number ones in the UK and continues to strive with catchy singles.
7. Little Mix
The only group to have ever won the X Factor, Little Mix did so in 2011 under the tutelage of Tulisa. Since then the foursome have gone on to have considerable success both here and in the United States. Little Mix has been branded the next Spice Girls as well as the UK’s next biggest girl group capable of international success. Whether they soar or bomb one member has already guaranteed success by being the first Mrs One Direction. Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards seem to be headed down the marital route and we all know how long celebrity marriages last don’t we…
8. Cher Lloyd
The infamous Cher Lloyd was pure entertainment, good or bad on the 2011 series of X Factor. She didn’t even win but she made enough of a name for herself on the show with her “urban swagger” to secure a record deal with Simon Cowell’s. She has recently released a song featuring T.I called “I Wish” and has announced her second studio album is due for release.
9. Rebecca Ferguson
Well this cougar made headlines by dating Zayn from One Direction before she had a single of her own. Since that inevitable break up Rebecca has signed major record deals. Her debut single peaked at Number 10 on the UK singles chart but she is still set to release her second album in late 2013.
Undoubtedly the most successful act to come out of the X Factor, One Direction has taken the music industry by storm. After coming third in 2010, no one was sure if they would really go anywhere. However, their debut single What Makes You Beautiful was such a phenomenal success that they have stuck around. 19 million singles and 10 million albums say a lot for five lads from the UK who have sold out arenas all over the world. Whether you like them or not, there is no denying the impressive presence of One Direction and all they have achieved since their appearance on the show.
