We’ve gone Catfishing
It was earlier on this year that I was first introduced to the show ‘Catfish’ , the MTV show that follows the stories of couples that have met and fallen in love online but have never met in the real world. I personally find it weird, meeting people online is one thing but to have a relationship with someone that you have never seen in person is quite another.
How do you go from small talk to a random online to being in a relationship with them a couple weeks later never having met them. In the case of the ‘catfish’ without even having had a chat on Skype? You think your in a relationship with 22 year old part time model Isabel from Paris but really its 43 year old mother of 3 from Scunthorpe.
Of course in the case of the TV show it goes without saying that they are probably the most extreme cases of ‘Catfish’.
I spend a lot of my day on twitter, facebook, instagram and other social media platforms. I’ve come to the realisation that there are a lot of fake profiles out there mostly due to the amount of time that I spend mindlessly scrolling through status updates, peoples photos on insta, trending topics. My favourite today has got to be #worstpickuplines probably because I found myself ticking off all the ones that I’d find myself spouting after one to many tequilas on a night out.
Anyway, I digress. It was after having a chat with a friend a couple of days ago that I realised these Catfish are really out there! She sent me a picture of a guy, a friend of hers had met on a dating site (the picture had the xclusivetouch watermark on it) but after several attempts at meeting up he would also cancel. She wanted to know if I had ever seen him at one of my events. I probably wouldn’t have recognised him even if he had.
If you are the mystery man in question or even know him get in touch!
I can’t help but wonder how many of these ‘catfish’ are actually out there?
